Movies watched, July 2021

from Postcards from the Edge (1990)

We’re entering the part of summer that I am not the biggest fan of. Usually I find an excuse to step outside of New York around this time of the year. I guess the world is on fire, so soon enough everything will be even hotter. Appreciated seeing so many of our friends in person in the last few weeks though.

(1996) The Birdcage

  • Really can’t believe I hadn’t seen this movie before. Malcolm kept referring to this when my Dad first came to New York with the rest of the family to meet him (alongside our other favorite, The Wedding Banquet.)

(1990) Postcards from the Edge

  • Malcolm was going through a bunch of films directed by Mike Nichols. Meryl Streep and Shirley MacLaine were so good. The fact that the climax of the film played out in a quiet, intimate moment, over a couple of lines of dialogues really impacted me.

(2021) Zola

  • Ok, I know it’s supposed to be funny, but this was terrifying for me. A thoughtful romp with very surprising performances.

(2020) Doctor Sleep

  • What a ridiculous idea. Have to give them props that somehow this got made. Terrible, but weirdly fun film to sit through. The “Hat” is very distracting, but Ewan McGregor and . Basically Dream Warriors, but within The Shining’s universe, with Scanners sequels vibes (which I watched most of.)
