Movies Watched, Nov. 2022

How did we get to the end of the year already? A year that is both long and short, with a lot of changes. Lots of good movies this year!

Yentl (1983)

The details on how the film was made is amazing. Obviously, a queer story. They should remake this and make it into a proper trans / gay story. Laughed and cried. Barbra was and still is a force. Loved that itโ€™s so horny.

Banshees of Inisherin (2022)

A good accompaniment to Parallel Mothers as different films that deal with history, conflict, trauma and how it inherently manifest in who we are. Funny and tragic, one of my favorites this year.

Tar (2022)

Great first half. Blanchett is undoubtedly great. The Philippines stuff feels really weird, even though itโ€™s about whiteness made it feel a little too obvious that it is written by a white person. Wanted it to be a tighter film, felt too overwrought without necessarily saying enough.

Wakanda Forever (2022)

Did not expect how emotional it was going to be. The film was a lot about family and grief, which really affected me and my friend who watched it with me. Glad to have seen this with the audience over at BAM. Really appreciate a film of this scale wrestle with concepts around colonialism.

Barbarian (2022)

Shot well. Really liked how it built atmosphere and tension especially in the first half. Couldโ€™ve been much more boring, but it was funny. Took turns (narratively) in a way that kept my attention while being not overly twist-y.

Triangle of Sadness (2022)

Resonant, amazing performances. Not subtle, but the film felt timely and needed. The dialogue cuts in a way that made me gasp a lot. Great use of Life by Desโ€™ree. Not sure what it says about me, but the film presented horrifying situations that feel strangely familiar in real life.
